Well, not yet.

Section 7203 of the Baucus health care bill says that anyone who does not buy health insurance and does not pay the fine could be sentenced with up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $25,000.

Ensign receives handwritten confirmation

This doesn't happen often enough.

Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) received a handwritten note Thursday from Joint Committee on Taxation Chief of Staff Tom Barthold confirming the penalty for failing to pay the up to $1,900 fee for not buying health insurance.

Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor and could face up to a year in jail or a $25,000 penalty, Barthold wrote on JCT letterhead. He signed it "Sincerely, Thomas A. Barthold."

The note was a follow-up to Ensign's questioning at the markup.

well insurance that has no restrictions on who can buy it or not only works if everyone buys it. Otherwise I could just stop on the way to the hospital and pay a month's premium to cover my heart attack.
I still check the boards over at ST.com but lately its like beer and chips without the beer and the big chips are all gone. - Kang

Isn't that a bit irrelevant since even the bills currently under construction in Congress will still be drastically more expensive than what the Canadians pay?

Wise words from the Buddha

A fine, for no health insurance ??

Are you serious, or is this a joke thread ??

If it is real, then it's one way to keep insurance companies in business, though when you try to get money out of them - good luck !!!

I have read about this other places as well. It's serious. The reasoning is that people can get fined for not having car insurance why not fine them for not having health insurance. The huge difference is that if you are really poor you can choose not to have a car therefore not need to pay for insurance. I don't think anyone would be off the hook here. The unemployed, underemployed and homeless all winding up in jail just because they are poor.

I could have insurance through my job if I wanted to put a third of my pay towards it, and that's just for me not my family. I can't afford that so I guess I will be in big trouble if this passes

If the politicians decide to post the bill online, you'll be able to read this for yourself.

Right.

If this were to be real, which I doubt that it is, it will overcrowd the already overcrowded penal system.

It's malarkey for lack of a better word. A joke.
